Majestic Elk on Canadian Silver Coin

The Royal Canadian Mint released a new coin under the series of $100 for $100 silver coins. It features an elk in its natural habitat of mountains and flowing water. The 99.99% pure silver 31.83 grams coin will be sold for its face value $100 as usual.

Elk is a common European name for moose and these animals were named so since the early European explorers found them to be similar to moose. Male elk have large antlers which shed every year. They conduct in mating behaviours like posturing, antler wrestling and bugling to attract females.

The latest elk coins have a mintage limit of 30,000. Other inscriptions on the reverse include CANADA, 2016, 100 DOLLARS and GL for the artist Glen Loates’s initials. Obverses feature the common portrait of Queen Elizabeth II with the inscriptions ELIZABETH II and D G REGINA.
