Montana quarter dollar error coin in circulation is worth more than face value because of its composition.

After analysing the George Washington obverse of the coin it was found that the coin was in circulation as it had a San Francisco Mint mark. The coin’s finish indicates that it is a Proof coin.

The San Francisco Mint Proof quarter dollars were struck in copper-nickel clad weighing 5.67 grams and .900 fine silver versions in 2007. This coin weighs 6.25 grams which means that it is a silver version without a copper core.

The 2007 quarter copper-nickel dollar denomination was struck at the Denver and Philadelphia Mints for general circulation and Uncirculated sets, and at the San Francisco Mint for regular Proof sets. The Proof silver quarter dollars for the Silver Proof sets were struck at the San Francisco. The San Francisco Mint also produces clad America the Beautiful quarter dollars in circulation quality only for collectors.

The last silver quarter circulation dollars are dated 1964. In 1992 Silver was again used for the dime, quarter dollar and half-dollar used in the annual Silver Proof sets.

The 6.25-gram silver quarter dollar contains 0.18084 ounce of pure silver which means that this coin can fetch $3.44 as per market rates of silver.
