Remains of 17th C Merchant with Coins Discovered

2016-10-06 Thu

In 2013, Swiss archaeologists discovered more than 300 graves dated between the eighth and seventeenth centuries A.D. Recently, one of them was found buried face down with a knife and a leather purse containing coins.

Further research by experts from the Archaeological Services of Canton Bern revealed that the 24 corroded low valued coins belong to three different coin circulation regions, the Fribourg-Bern-Solothurn, Basel-Freiburg in Breisgau, and Luzern-Schwyz. The latest coin out of them was issued in the year 1629 which means that the man was buried after that. The collection also had one worn French silver coin of higher value.

Experts have predicted that the man could be a travelling merchant who moved through these areas. The reason why the body was buried face down is still unknown. It was probably a way to insult him, prevent his return or send him to hell.
