Today the United States lost its greatest hero! Abraham Lincoln, the 16th President of United States was shot dead 151 years ago on 14th April 1865.

Abraham Lincoln was born in a small village of Kentucky in a constantly migrating family. This ambitious boy set out of his house to pursue his career in Law. His political career began in 1834 when he was elected to Illinois state legislature. Eventually, in Nov 1960, Mr. Lincoln was elected the 16th president of the United States.

He was the first president from the Republican Party. He is considered to be the most remarkable President of US, even though he served the nation for a brief period of time. He led the United States through civil war. He preserved the Union, abolished slavery, strengthened the federal government, and modernized the economy.

However, this visionary leader was assassinated on the eve of Civil war. When the conflict entered the final stage, many plots to kidnap the president were planned. In a desperate attempt to save Confederacy, John Wilkes Booth assassinated the President.

He is by far the single most pictured American on postage stamps worldwide. Lincoln appears on the 5 dollar banknotes, one cent and one dollar coins of the USA as well as stamps of the USA and many countries of the world. India Post also issued a commemorative postage stamp worth INR 0.15, featuring a portrait of the president.
