Grading of Coins
2018-03-23 Fri
Today we will be discussing one of the main topics of the numismatic world, Grading of Coins. It is a process which determines the grade and the condition of a coin which helps us in evaluating the value of that particular piece of metal (coin). The quality of coins is not same and hence it is necessary to grade it. The grading of any coin depends on five main criteria: strike, preservation, lustre, colour, and eye appeal. The grades are as follows:
Poor: a large part of the coin will be completely flat, legends and date on the coins may barely be readable or completely missing.
Good: little or some part of the coin may be very weak, due to circulation the surface of the coin may have worn out, but details are still visible.
Very Good: Nearly around 25% of the details are visible.
Fine: Around 50% of the details are clearly visible. The coin would have worn-out all over the flan.
Very Fine: About 75% details of the coins are easily visible.
Extremely Fine: Details on the coins are easily visible.
Un-circulated: A coin which had never been in general circulation. This does not have many signs of handing.
Thus grading of the coin is very important for an individual to know more about his coin. This helps an individual to have basic knowledge of his coin.
