One such dance tradition is Odissi, also a part of the Seven Classical Dance forms.Odissi was originated in Orissa state; this dancing tradition is almost two thousand years old. Odissi represents passion, ecstatic and sensuousness. Odissi has originated from Devadasi tradition like most of the classical dance forms. The ruler of the region build big and magnificent temple. Odissi has three distinguished features head, bust and torso; the postures dealing with these three elements are called Tribhangi. Odissi theme is almost religious in nature and mostly revolves around the life story of Shri Krishna.
Over a period of time three schools of Odissi dance developed, they are- Mahari, Nartaki, and Gotipau. Till 17th century Odissi held great esteem but slowly the shine of this dance declined. After independence Government of India took great efforts to revive this old dance tradition.
