2022-05-09 Mon

Coins of Republic India were first minted in 1950 and exist presently in denominations of 50 paise, 1, 2, 5, and 10 rupees. After India’s independence, the pre-decimal coinage system was used followed by a decimal and stainless steel coinage. Various patterns are placed around the coin’s edge for security including the reeded, serrated, milled, and smooth edge. Commemorative coins were first produced in 1964. Indian coin mints are located in Kolkata, Mumbai, Hyderabad, and Noida.

The obverse of the coin depicts, “5 RUPEES in Devnagari above and in roman below with year flanked by lotus flower on both sides.” The reverse of the coin states, “Ashoka lion Capital flanked by INDIA in Roman on Right and BHARAT in Devanagari on Left.”

The 5 Rupee coin was issued in 2004. The compositions of the metal are copper-nickel in the coin.
