Jallianwala Bagh Postage Stamps

On 13th April 2019, the Vice President of India, Venkaiah Naidu released a set of two postage stamps to pay tribute to the innocent lives that were lost during the Jallianwala Bagh massacre 100 years ago. The 25 rupees stamp depicts an illustration of the memorial that was built at the site while the 5 rupees stamp depicts another important structure from the area. Other texts featured on the stamp include “100 YEARS OF JALLIANWALA BAGH MASSACRE”, JALLIANWALA BAGH NARSANHAR KE 100 VARSH in Hindi, denomination, country name and year date. The background of the souvenir sheet depicts the infamous wall in Jallianwala Bagh along with other statues.Governor VP Singh Badnore was also present during the event. A two-minute silence was observed and “Sarv Dharm Prarthana” was recited. Along with the postage stamps, a 100 rupees commemorative coin was also released to mark the same event. Punjab Police and the Border Security Force reversed their arms as a mark of respect to the martyrs.
On 13th April 1919, the British Army started firing at innocent people on the orders of Brigadier-General Reginald Dyer at Jallianwalla Bagh. The crowd comprised of several women and children as well. They had gathered for a peaceful protest against the unjust Rowlatt Act. As many as 379 people were killed in this gruesome massacre.
