Cherrystone Philatelic Auctioneers is going to offer a wide range of interesting postage stamps from 6th to 7th August at their gallery in New York City. One of the highlights is a 5¢ red and blue stamp issued by Canada in 1959 featuring St. Lawrence Seaway with an inverted central design. It was one of the joint-issues released that year with the US. Experts believe that only 400 such error stamps exist today. The offered stamp is in never-hinged condition and showcases fresh colours. The opening bid for this item has been set at $7,000.A 12-penny black coloured specimen stamp featuring Queen Victoria with a carmine vertical specimen overprint issued by Canada in 1851 is another exciting offering to look out for. It has been listed as Unitrade 3Pi and has a market value of $2,500 Canadian. The offered stamp has an opening bid of $1,200 and has good margins on all sides. Apart from a slight tear, a little section of gum and mild marks, the stamp is very fine and rare according to the auction house.
A 20-lepta dark blue stamp with a bluish Hermes Head issued in 1861 by Greece will be offered at a starting bid of $10,000. These provisional stamps were printed in Athens and this particular example has full margins. The stamp shows a quadrille background with no control figures. The dots postmark of Pyrgos, Greece has been used to cancel the stamp as “13”. The stamp has been signed by Behrens, Calves, Brun, and Peter Holcombe, with his 1989 and 1988 Diena certificates.
