Mehmood Ali, The multi-talented and versatile Bollywood actor who made people laugh, breathed his last on 23rd July 2004. He was arguably the most successful comedian of Indian Cinema.Mahmood Ali was born 29th September 1932, in the family of a huge star of the 40's and 50's cinema. He began his acting career as a child artist in a Bombay Talkies studio film, Kismat. As a full-fledged actor, he played minor roles in his initial films like Do Bheega Zameen, CID, and Pyaasa among others.
Mehmood got his first big break in the movie Parvashi in which he played Raj Kapoor’s brother. Later he launched him as the ‘king of comedy’. He worked in more than 300 films. Famous for his slapstick humour, he is immortalized in the song “Ek Chatur Nar” of the Movie Padosan. He played the role of Mahesh – the rikshawala in the iconic movie Kunwara Baap. Mehmood and his characters still resonate in the hearts of his fans, young and old alike.
He bagged five Filmfare awards, four of which were for ‘Best Comedian’. To honour him India Postal Department has issued 500 paise (5 Rupee) Commemorative Postage Stamp in 2013.
