Azimabad was one of the mint city for Mughal Empire, Today Azimabad is known as Patna, the capital city of Bihar and during the ancient period, it was popularly known as Patliputra. It was the capital of Mauryan, Shunga, and Gupta Empires during ancient times.During the medieval period after the invasion of Muslim Pashtun Bakhtiyar Khilji, it came under the rule of Muslim rule. Later, many Muslim rulers left there foot mark in this city. This city was also ruled by Nawab of Bengal, East India Company and British India.
When Sur Dynasty ruler Sher Shah Suri sat on the throne and renamed this city as Patna. In the year 1704; Patna was renamed as Azimabad by Azim-us-Shan, a grandson of Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb who was appointed as the subehdar (viceroy) of Bengal, Bihar, and Orissa. Later, this new name Azimabad was eventually fell out of use and the city was back to being called as Patna; as known in the medieval era since the reign of Sher Shah Suri.
This silver rupee which weighs around 11.5g was issued by Mughal ruler Farrukhsiyar during the 3rd year of his reign.
