Remembering Pingali Venkayya

While millions of Indian look up to the tricolor with pride and patriotism, very less is known about the man who designed the flag. Pingali Venkayya was the man who designed the tricolor flag of India, was born on August 2 in 1876 at Bhatlapenumarru near Andhra Pradesh. He was also an Indian freedom fighter, whom the nation remembers proudly.At a young age, he had served as a soldier in the British India Army in South Africa during the Anglo Boer war in Africa. According to The Hindu, "Pingali Venkayya was an authority in geology, agriculture and also an educationist who set up an educational institution in Machilipatnam.
He was honored with various titles such as 'Japan Venkayya', 'Patti (cotton) Venkayya' and 'Jhanda Venkayya'.The great Indian freedom fighter and the designer of the Indian national flag died today on 4th July 1963. To honor him, India Postal Department has issued 500 Paise commemorative postage stamp in 2009.
