Remembering Bidhan Chandra Roy

1st July is a day when the entire country celebrates National Doctor’s day to honour the legendary physician and the second chief minister of Bengal, Dr Bidhan Chandra Roy. He was born on July 1, 1882 and died on the same date in 1962.Bidhan Chandra Roy was born in Bankipore, Bihar, to a Bengali Kayastha family. His father, Prakash Chandra Roy worked as an excise inspector. Bidhan Chandra Roy completed his medical graduation from Calcutta and returned to India in 1911, after completing his MRCP and FRCS degrees in London. He started off as a physician in India, in the same year.
Dr. Roy is often referred to as the maker of Modern West Bengal. He laid the foundation of five eminent cities, namely, Durgapur, Kalyani, Bidhannagar, Ashokenagar, and Habra. On 4th of February in 1961, he was honoured with the great Indian civilian award, Bharat Ratna. He also served as the second Chief Minister of West Bengal from 1948 until his death.
India Post issued a 50 Paisa stamp to celebrate National Doctor’s Day. It depicts a portrait of Bidhan Chandra Roy.
