Frederick Douglass was an American social reformer, abolitionist, orator, writer, and statesman. He was one of the most eminent human right leaders of the 19th Century. After escaping from the slavery he spent most of his life advocating for social justice, holding a place within the ranks of such prominent figures as President Lincoln, William Lloyd Garrison, Harriet Tubman, and Susan B. Anthony.The Frederick Douglass National Historic site was established in the year 1962, it was established to preserve the home and legacy of Frederick Douglass, abolitionist, civil rights advocate, author, and statesman. Douglass lived in this home from 1877 until his death in 1895.
