The United States of America had issued this commemorative quarter-dollar coin in the year 2009 with the theme of District of Columbia.The District of Columbia is not a state, but it is a federal state. The District of Columbia is also stated as D.C or Washington, with its capital as the United States. The name Washington was named George Washington, the founding father and first president of the United States of America. In the year 1787, when the constitution was adopted, the District of Columbia was part of the state of Maryland. In the year 1791, the District of Columbia was ceded to the federal government for the purpose of becoming the nation’s capital and this District was governed by Congress.
This quarter dollar is the first quarter dollar issued in the year 2009 under the District of Columbia and United States Territories Program. The reverse of this coin depicts Duke Ellington, an internationally renowned composer and musician seated at a grand piano.
