2016-04-13 Wed

One of America’s Founding Fathers, Thomas Jefferson was born on 13th April 1743. He was the principal drafter of the Declaration of Independence and the nation’s preeminent political theorist.

In 1800, Thomas Jefferson was elected as the 3rd President of the United States. He was a proponent of democracy, republicanism, and individual rights, which motivated American colonists to break from Great Britain and form a new nation. He was the most influential and admired Founding Father.

For someone who was sometimes referred to as the "silent member" of the Continental Congress, Thomas Jefferson spoke volumes with his pen. He drafted the Declaration of Independence at the age of 33. Interestingly, Jefferson also invented methods for excavating archaeological sites!

Thomas Jefferson first appears on stamps from 1856, however, he appears comparatively less often on US postage issues. He appears on the Presidential 1 Dollar and also on the 2 Dollar bills.
