2,000-year-old Coins Unearthed in Telangana

Here’s some exciting news for history lovers. Last week, on Wednesday, a team of archaeologists working on ongoing excavations in Pajjuru, Nalgonda district, unearthed coins and a crystal conearium rod dating back to 1st century to 3rd century AD.

Apart from that a square-shaped lead coin embossed with a figure of a horse, dating back to the Mahatalavara dynasty, a copper coin, a terracotta bead and a bangle fashioned from shells were also discovered.

As per expert numismatists, Talavara coins are from Telangana region. Mahatalavaras ruled the territories in Andhra Desa either prior to the Satavahana rule or during the post-Satavahana period.

N.R. Visalatchy, Director, Department of Archaeology and Museums, who is overseeing the work in Nalgonda district states that the copper coin has rust and needs chemical cleaning. The other coins will also be cleaned.
