Follis of Justin II

Justin II was Byzantine Emperor (Eastern Roman Emperor) from 565 to 574. He was a nephew and close advisor of Justinian I and Empress Theodora. He attempts to maintain the integrity of the Byzantine Empire against the encroachments of the Avars, Persians, and Lombards.During the reign he issued gold, silver, and copper coins with various descriptions. These coins were issued in the denomination of Solidus, Siliqua, Follis, and Nummus. From the time of Justin II the obverses showed two or more standing imperial figures combined with the mark of value.
The above shown follis or 40 nummi of issued during his reign from Nicomedia mint. The obverse of a coin portray Justin on left holding cross on globe and Sophia on right holding cross, both nimbate, seated on double throne; cross above between their heads. The reverse of a coin has Large M (mark of value); A/N/N/O to left, ? archaic digamma or vau (year) to right, cross above, A (officina) below, NIKO in exergue.
