Coinage of Mulam Thirunal Rama Varma

Mulam Thirunal Rama Varma also known as the Rama Varma VI was the Maharaja of Travancore Princely State. In 1885 he succeeded his uncle Visakham Thirunal and ruled till 1924 AD. It was during his tenure the Travancore Legislative Council was established. It was the first Legislative Council for a native state in the history of India. His reign also saw major changes in the transport sector in Travancore.During the reign he issued gold, silver, copper, and bronze coins. These coins were issued in the denomination of Fanam, Rupee, Cash, and Chukram. His hammered coinage is consisting of Cash, ½ Chuckram and ¼ Chuckram. It depicted the bodied figure with one or two dot and Conch with 6 spines on its obverse while, reverse of a coin has 6 pointed star.
The above shown copper half Chukram belong to his reign. This coin illustrates the Conch with 6 spines and Malayalam legend ‘Ara chuckram’ around on the obverse face. The reverse of a coin depicted the decorated sudarsana chakram.
