First Commemorative Stamps of Liechtenstein were issued 11th November 1928 in order to commemorate 70th Anniversary of Johann II, Prince of Liechtenstein. The postal history of the principality pre-dates the introduction of the first postage stamps in 1850. The principality was obliged to use Austrian stamps until 1912 when the first Liechtenstein issues were produced, although these were still issued under Austrian direction.
Following the collapse of Hapsburg Austria in 1918, Liechtenstein secured postal independence and began issuing its own stamps from July 1920. The First Commemorative stamps of the country were issued to celebrate the 70th Birth Anniversary of Johann II, Prince of Liechtenstein.
The stamps depict two portraits of Johann II. The left one is of the Young Johann and the right one is Johann at the age of 70. The Crown of the principality can be seen on the top. The stamps are issued with the denominations raging from 1.20 Swiss francs to of 5 Swiss francs with the years 1858 and 1928 at both sides.
