Alluri Sitarama Raju, A great revolutionary hero, and a true Indian patriot died on 7th May 1924. He was referred as “Manyam Veerudu” (Hero of the Jungles) in recognition of his work as a freedom fighter and for the welfare of the tribal people.Raju was born on 4th July 1897 in a village called Mogallu, in West Godavari District. He led a protest movement in the border areas of the East Godavari and Vishakhapatnam regions of Madras Presidency, in present-day Andhra Pradesh. Raju and his followers stole guns and ammunition and killed several British army officers, including Scott Coward near Dammanapalli.
He is the brave son of India who laid down his life to free mother India from the oppression of British Raj. India Postal Department has issued commemorative postage stamp featuring him in the series of ‘India’s struggle for freedom’ in 1986.
