Coinage of Tahmasp II

Tahmasp II was one of the last Safavid rulers of Iran ruled from 1729 to 1732 AAD. When his father, Husayn was forced to abdicate by the Afghans in 1722, Prince Tahmasp wished to claim the throne. He gained the support of the Sunni Muslims of the Caucasus as well as several Qizilbash tribes.During the reign, he issued gold and silver coins in the denomination of Ashrafi, Shahi, and Abbasi. These coins were struck at Astarabad, Ganjan, Isfahan, Mashhad, Qazvin, Shiraz, Rasht, Yazd, Tabriz etc.
The above shown silver Abbasi belongs to his reign. This coin was issued in 1142 from Qazwin mint. It depicted the shah Tahmap II couplet, Mint and date below "be-giti sekke-ye sahebqerani zad as toufiq-e haqq Tahmasp-e thani zarb Qazwin 1142".The reverse of a coin has Shiite formula in beaded circle; names of twelve Imams around ‘La illaha Illallahu Muhammad Nabi Allah (instead of Rasulullah) Ali wali Allah’.
