Thirty years ago the world witnessed one of the worst disasters in the history of mankind, known as Chernobyl catastrophe or Chernobyl disaster. The Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant or Chernobyl Nuclear Power Station is a decommissioned nuclear power station near the city of Pripyat, Ukraine. Reactor Number 4 was the site of the Chernobyl disaster in 1986 on 26th April 1986.
On 26 April 1986, at midnight reactor four suffered a catastrophic power increase, leading to explosions in its core. As a result, about 3% to 7% of radionuclides were thrown into the environment. Two Chernobyl plant workers died on the night of the accident, and a further 28 people died within a few weeks as a result of acute radiation poisoning.
The accident contaminated more than 145 thousand square kilometers of territory of Ukraine, Belarus, and Russia. Chernobyl disaster affected over 8.5 million people with radioactive nuclides; around 5000 settlements in those countries were infected. Except for Ukraine, Belarus, and Russia, the Chernobyl disaster has impacted Sweden, Norway, Poland, Britain, and other countries.
The incidence resulted in control over the use of nuclear power and the establishment of nuclear plants all over the world. The Chernobyl Tragedy also became a turning point of the cold war as after this incident, USSR began to split.
