One-Sixth Tanka of Muhammad Shah I of Bahamani Sultanate

Muhammad Shah I was the second ruler of Bahamani Sultanate during the medieval period in India. He succeeded his father Ala-ud-Din Bahman Shah in the year 1359 CE and ruled it till 1375 CE. The reign of Muhammad Shah I is marked as a series of war between his kingdom and two neighbouring kingdoms Vijaynagar Empire and Warangal under Kapaya Nayaka.After sitting on the throne of Bahamani Sultanate Muhammad shah issued coins in three metals gold, silver, and copper. In gold denomination, he issued denomination like Dinar and Tanka. Both his gold dinar and tanka bears the legend ‘‘Al-Ahd wa’l Zaman Hami Millat Rasul Al-Rahman’ meaning ‘Sultan of the time and the age, the defender of the faith of the prophet of the Merciful One’.
This One-Sixth was issued by Muhammad Shah I weighs around 1.71g. The obverse of this coin is inscribed as ‘Bina Din Allah’. The reverse of this coin is inscribed as ‘Abu'l Muzaffar Muhammad Shah’.
