Ala-Al-Din Mahmud Shah I was the ruler of Malwa Sultanate, he is also known as Mahmud Khilji. He crowned himself after the assassination of Mohammad, the son of the previous ruler, Hoshang Shah I. After on the throne of Malwa Sultanate he carried a successful campaign against Delhi Sultanate. During his rule, Malwa Sultanate reached at its greatest height.After sitting on the throne of Malwa Sultanate Mahmud Shah I issued coins in four metals gold, silver, billon, and copper. All the gold coins issued by him were of two types. One he issued with the title ‘Sikandar Al Thani’ legend inscribed on it and other with the basic title. Silver coins also have the ‘Sikandar Al Thani legend but have two varieties. One with the obverse legend in the plain surface and reverse legend is within the circle. And the other type has both the sides within the double square.
This billon tanka was issued by him during the Hijri Year 848 weighs around 10.96g. The obverse of this coin is inscribed as ‘Al Sultan Al Halim Al Karim Ala Al Dunya Wa'l Din with Hijri Date’. The reverse of this coin is inscribed as ‘Abu'l Muzaffar Mahmud Shah Khalji, Mint in Margin’.
