William Wordsworth, a major English Romantic poet, who leaves us mesmerised by his beautiful poems was born on 7th April 1770.

He along with Samuel Taylor Coleridge helped launch the Romantic Age in English literature with their joint publication Lyrical Ballads (1798). Wordsworth made his debut as a writer in 1787 when he published a sonnet in The European Magazine.

In 1843, Wordsworth became the British Poet Laureate, an honorary position appointed by the monarch of the United Kingdom.

The poet quotes: “Poetry is the spontaneous overflow of powerful feelings: it takes its origin from emotion recollected in tranquillity.” And indeed, it is those emotions scribed on the paper that have touched our hearts.

William Wordsworth was honoured on a 1 shilling 6 pence vintage British postage stamp celebrating the 200th Anniversary of the birth of famous English romantic poet circa 1970.
