The Solomon Islands, a nation of hundreds of islands in the South Pacific, has many World War II-era sites. Guadalcanal, a province and one of the archipelago’s largest islands, honours the fallen Allied soldiers at its U.S. War Memorial. Guadalcanal is also home to the nation’s capital, Honiara, whose bustling Central Market showcases the islands’ produce and traditional handicrafts.The Solomon Islands dollar is the currency of Solomon Islands since 1977. It is subdivided into 100 cents. On 24 October 1977 banknotes were introduced in denominations of 2, 5 and 10 dollars, with 20-dollar notes added on 24 October 1980.
Today we are looking at a 10 dollars banknote of 1986. The obverse has a melange of a variety of items of national importance, such as the official Coat of Arms depicting a crocodile and a shark; Stylised fish and frigate birds; Ceremonial bowl shaped like bird and fish; Tema - Santa Cruz Island shell pendant kapkap and Dafi - engraved pearl shell gorget with frigate bird overlay from Malaita Island above it. The reverse has Poata - the Shell Money; Female hole driller using a turtle shell flywheel to drill holes in shell disks and beads.
