Nasir al-Din Mahmud Shah I Gold Tanka Listed For INR 65,000

Nasir Al-Din Mahmud Shah I was the Sultan of Gujarat, he ruled Gujarat Sultanate from 1458 CE till 1511 CE. After sitting on the throne of Gujarat Sultanate he issued a large number of coins. He issued coins in all three metals gold, silver and copper; few billion coins struck by him are also found. Nasir Al-Din Mahmud Shah I had also got the title ‘Begada’. ‘Be’ means Two and ‘Gada’ means Fort. Hence the word ‘Begada’ means master of two impregnable forts - Champaner and Junagadh.This gold tanka which was issued by him weighs around 11.6g was minted in Muhammadabad. The obverse of this coin is inscribed as ‘Al Wathiq Ba Tayid al Rahman Nasir-al-Dunya Wa'l Din Abu'l Fath’. The reverse of this coin is inscribed as Mahmud Shah Bin Muhammad Shah al-Sultan within Double Square. Mint and date in the margins’.
This gold tanka is listed for INR 65,000 in the upcoming auction of Classical Numismatic Gallery which will be held in Mumbai on 19th April 2019.
