Queen’s Birthday To Be Celebrated With A New Coin Release

2016-04-05 Tue

As the nation waits in anticipation for the Queen’s 90th birthday, a special commemorative coin is going to be issued whose designs are approved by the Queen herself.

The Queen’s actual birthday is on 21st April and her official birthday is on 11th June. Apart from the weekend long birthday celebrations of the longest-reigning monarch, the coin release would definitely be a special one.

The coin features a garland of roses indicating her fondness for flowers and nature, and was designed by artist and sculptor Christopher Hobbs.

The designer says, “The central ‘EIIR’ is surrounded by a classical wreath of celebration. I have tried to make the roses more natural than heraldic, each one different from the other.”

The Royal Mint is also offering a free £5 coin gift to those who turn 90 on the same day as the Queen. They can be nominated by friends or relatives via the organisation’s Facebook page.

The Royal Mint has struck coins to mark the Queen’s 70th and 80th birthdays and other significant dates as well.
