Kamaladevi Chattopadhyay - a freedom fighter who also promoted traditional art and craft of India was born on 3rd April 1903. She is one of the unsung feminist social reformer, art enthusiasts, and culture queen of India.Born in Mangalore, Kalamaladevi Chattopadhyay got married at the age of 14 and was widowed two years later. She is regarded as the visionary behind the famous cultural institutions in India such as National School of Drama, Sangeet Natak Akademi, Central Cottage Industries Emporium, and the Crafts Council of India.
Kamaladevi was honored with several awards for her groundbreaking work. She was awarded the Ramon Magsaysay Award in 1966, Padma Bhushan in 1955 and Padma Vibhushan in 1987. Besides this, in 1974, she was awarded the Sangeet Natak Akademi Fellowship the highest honour conferred by the Sangeet Natak Akademi.
India Postal Department has issued 2 commemorative postage Stamps to celebrate Kamaladevi's multi-faceted accomplishments and her immense contribution in enriching India's cultural and social fabric.
