Col.His Highness Sir Ranjitsinhji Vibhaji, Maharaj Jamsaheb of Nawanaga died today in 1933. He is often known as Ranitsinhji or Ranji for his entire cricket personal during his international and national cricket career. He played for English cricket team and participated in First-class cricket for Cambridge University, and county cricket for Sussex.Ranji was called as the Greatest batsmen of all time, Neville Cardus called him as the ‘Midsummer night’s dream of cricket’. He is known to revolutionise and improvise this game. He is particularly associated with one shot, the leg glance, which he invented and popularised. The era in which he played cricket is known as the ‘Golden Age of Cricket’.
The famous ‘Ranji Trophy’ is also named after him. Later on, he was Chancellor of the Indian Chamber of Princes and represented India at the League of Nations.
