The prominent Indian nationalist and Leader of the Goan Freedom Movement, Dr. Tristao Braganza Cunha was born on 2nd April 1891. He is popularly known as the “Father of Goan nationalism” and organizer of the first movement to liberate Goa from Portuguese rule.Cunha completed his school education in Panaji and then went to Pondicherry to French College for his B.A. and then to Paris. He returned to Goa in 1926 and set up Comissao do Congresso de Goa (Goa Congress Committee) to organize the Goan intelligentsia against Portuguese colonial rule.
His booklet, Four hundred years of Foreign Rule, and his pamphlet, Denationalisation of Goa, were to be proven eye-openers to the Goans themselves to the painful oppression that had been forced upon them.
India Post has issued 300 Paisa (3Rupee) commemorative postage stamps on his 40th death anniversary.
