APMEX released the second coin from a special three-coin set to celebrate the 825th anniversary of Austrian Mint. The three coins honour three historical moments of the Austrian Mint. Duke Leopold V of Austria and King Richard of England had a fight after the city of Acre was captured in 1191. King Richard was captured and imprisoned by Leopold near Vienna in that same year. Leopold asked for an enormous amount as a ransom for Richard’s release, and that’s how Robin Hood was born. Leopold used the Silver to establish Wiener Neustadt and the original mint in Vienna. The first coin in the series celebrates the achievements of Leopold.Wiener Neustadt is the subject for the second coin. Leopold established the township for Richard who was earlier imprisoned at Durnstein Castle. The town has witnessed several historical events after that. The city’s first castle, Burg Wiener Neustadt is featured on the coin. It now runs the Theresian Military Academy which was established in 1752 by Empress Maria Theresa of Austria. The common obverse design shows a crusader riding a horse. Other elements such as year, weight and denomination are also featured. The coin has a mintage limit of 100,000 pieces.
