Royal Canadian Mint issued a new silver coin to celebrate the induction of Newfoundland and Labrador as a new Canadian province in 1949, both of which were British colonies earlier. The reverse side of the new coin recreates the coin-design that was featured on the famous 1947 silver dollar. It depicts a ship named Matthew which was used by European explorer John Cabot to discover Newfoundland’s shores in 1497.The original design was hand-carved by Engraver Thomas Shingles to produce exceptional detailing. The new coin is being struck on 5 oz. of 99.99% pure silver and like the original coin, the obverse also depicts an effigy of King George VI.
Several other interesting coins are going to be released this month by Royal Canadian Mint. Four square coins defining the four main elements: fire, air, earth and water are a part of 2019 $3 Fine Silver Coin Set – The Elements. Mr. Bernard Dumais of Levis, QC, a member of the Mint’s Masters Club loyalty program, suggested the idea for this coin series and Toronto artist Rebecca Yanovskaya designed the coins. A motif of red, yellow, brown and green maple leaves represents every element. When the coins are placed adjacent to each other in a particular way, a circular image is formed, symbolising the changing seasons of Canada.
The 40th Anniversary of the Gold Maple Leaf coin is celebrated with the release of a $20 Fine Silver Coin. The central design of the new double-incuse coin sinks into the surface. The reverse side depicts a sugar maple leaf with selective gold-plating, while the obverse depicts an effigy of Queen Elizabeth II.
