Highlights from the Joel R. Anderson Collection

Part 4 of the sale of Joel R. Anderson Collection of US Paper Money was organised by Stack’s Bowers Galleries on 28th February in Baltimore. The Collection was sold for a record-breaking $34,126,980! Three notes were sold for more than a million dollars and ¼ of the lots were sold for more than $100,000.A set of nine 1869 Rainbow Notes from $1 to $1,000 denominations were sold separately for a total of more than $3.6 million. Both the $500 and $1,000 notes were sold for $1.44 million each, as they were the only examples of their respective types in private hands.
An 1863 Interest Bearing $100 note was sold for $204,000. Two Interest Bearing notes of 1864 were sold for more than $100,000. A $50 note which was once auctioned at Barney Bluestone’s 1944 sale of the Albert A. Grinnell Collection, was this time sold for $132,000. The finest graded and one of the four $100 notes was auctioned for $156,000.
The only privately held example of the 1891 $1,000 “Marcy Note” was auctioned publically for the first time and was sold for $1,920,000. The finest graded “Tombstone” Silver Certificate Note was auctioned for $45,600, an About New $50 was sold for $132,000 and a “Black Back” $100 was auctioned for $168,000.
The finest known 1863 $20 Gold Certificate was sold for $396,000. A $10 1902 Red Seal from the First National Bank of Gary, Indiana with Serial Number 1 was sold for $10,800.
