First Commemorative Stamps of Laos

Laos a north-east Asian country issued first commemorative stamps on 7th December 1952 which commemorates the admission of Laos to the UPU (Universal Postal Union).The UPU is a specialized agency of the United Nations that coordinates postal policies among member nations, in addition to the worldwide postal system. All United Nations member states are allowed to become members of the UPU. A non-member state of the United Nations may also become a member if two-thirds of the UPU member countries approve its request.
The UPU currently has 192 members. Laos became a member in the year 1952 after the establishment of the independent postal administration of the country. To commemorate the admission to the UPU, Laos issued a set of seven stamps which are also the first commemorative stamps of the country.
The stamps were issued on 7th December 1952 with the denominations of 0.80, 1, 1.20, 1.50, 1.90, 25, and 50 French Indochinese piastres. The stamps depict the logo of UPU (men and women dancing around the Earth) on the left and the portrait of Sisavang Vong – the king of Laos on right in an oval vignette.
