This was a small prank by Mintage World Team, hope you enjoy the day!On this day in 1700, English pranksters began popularising the annual tradition of April Fools’ Day by playing practical jokes on each other.
The exact origin of this day is obscure as this All Fools’ Day or April Fool’s Day has been celebrated for several centuries by different cultures. However, historians date it back to 1582 when France changed from Julian Calendar to Gregorian Calendar and the people who still failed to recognise the new start at the year on January 1st and still celebrated it on the 1st April became the butt of jokes. The people used to place a paper fish on their backs and referred to them as “poisson d’avril” meaning a young and a gullible person.
Some also tie April Fools’ Day to the vernal equinox, or first day of spring in the Northern Hemisphere, when Mother Nature fooled people with changing, unpredictable weather conditions.
We still celebrate the April Fools’ Day with lots of elaborate hoaxes and jokes!
In 2015, to honour of the international day of pranks, Royal Mail issued a 10-stamp series honouring Britain's favourite comedians. Photographs of The Two Ronnies, Norman Wisdom, Billy Connolly, Victoria Wood, Spike Milligan, Morecambe and Wise, Lenny Henry, Peter Cook and Dudley Moore, French and Saunders, and Monty Python adorn these new stamps.
These stamps pay tribute to the comedians who have made the nation laugh with their ground-breaking comedy.
