Coin Invest Trust released the second coin in its Prehistoric Beasts Series for Mongolia and it features the Protoceratops in Red Rock Finish. The coin has a face value of 2,000 Togrog and is struck in 3 oz of.999 fine silver at B. H. Mayer’s Kunstprageanstalt in Munich. 999 such coins would be available in Proof finish. The unique Red Rock finish makes the coin’s surface look like sandy rocks while Smartminting technology is used to apply high-relief on the skeleton design.

The obverse side depicts the logo of Central Bank of Mongolia. Other inscriptions include the denomination, 2,000 Togrog and, Latin lettering MONGOLIA 3 oz .999 SILVER. The fossilized skeleton of a Protoceratops is depicted on the reverse side along with the inscription Protoceratops andrewsi, in print Late Cretaceous, Mongolia.

The first coin in the “Prehistoric Beasts” series was issued in 2018 and it depicted a Velociraptor mongoliensis. In 1971, a fossil of a Velociraptor fighting a Protoceratops was found in the Mongolian Gobi Desert. According to the finds, Velociraptor was a dangerous predator with very sharp claws. Even though the herbivore Protoceratops was much larger and heavier than Velociraptor, the latter was believed to be more ferocious and is termed as “Fighting Dinosaurs”. The fossil reveals that the Velociraptor used its claws to attack Protoceratops’ head. It had also tried to tear the lower abdomen of the Protoceratops using its beak. The Protoceratops is seen holding Velociraptor’s arm in his beak. Researchers believe that both the dinosaurs died after the battle and the desert sand helped in preserving their remains.
