Kelleher and Rogers Auction to Offer Rare Chinese Stamps
2019-02-28 Thu
Kelleher and Rogers Auction will be held on 15th and 16th March in Hong Kong at 35/F Central Plaza, 18 Harbour Road, Wan Chai. A rare postage stamp, known as one of the “Four Treasures of the Republic”, will be offered during this auction. The 3¢ blue-green Junk stamp of China was issued in 1915 as the first Peking printing. It was later surcharged in red in 1922 to create the 2¢-on-3¢ stamp. The inverted surcharge variety of this stamp is considered to be very rare.
The offered stamp has fresh colours and well-centred designs. It does not have gum and is in Very Fine condition. 15 unused and 2 used examples of these stamps exist today. It will be offered at an estimated value of HK$500,000 to HK$600,000, and an opening bid of HK$250,000. It has a listed market value of $175,000. However, it is difficult to value the stamp accurately. The stamp comes along with a 2018 Experts and Consultants Ltd. photo certificate.
Various interesting stamps issued by Chinese local posts, empire and republic, provinces, foreign offices and occupations, Taiwan, the People’s Republic, Hong Kong etc. will also be offered during the auction.
Items from the Steven J. Berlin collection of Karl Lewis illustrated covers is another highlight. Lewis was born in Kentucky and moved to Yokohama in 1901. His earliest hand-painted cachet covers are going to be offered at the auction.
