Today on this day in 1989 the great Politician of Maharashtra, Vasantdada Patil breathed his last. He was known as the first modern Maratha strongman and first mass leader in Maharashtra’s politics.Vasantrao Banduji Patil was born on 13th November 1917 in the village of Padmale near Sangli, Maharashtra. An active participant of many socialist and independence movement and campaigns, he suffered imprisonment many times. He was active participants of Quit Indian Movement and later he was also influenced by Netaji Subhash Chandra.
Vasantdada served various posts in his political career. He became Chief Minister of Maharashtra during the tenure of 17 May 1977 to 18 July 1978 and again from 2 February 1983 to 1 June 1985. He also served as Governor of Rajasthan from 1985 to 1987.
For his contribution, Indian Government honored him with Padma Bhushan, the third highest civilian award of Republic India. India Post has issued 500 Paisa (5 Rupee) commemorative postage stamp on the Death Anniversary of Vasantdada Patil.
