Traditional craft of India: Handicrafts

At the end of 2018, India Post issued a miniature sheet illustrating the different handicraft of India from various part of India. This sheet presents Jaipur blue pottery, Maddalam of Palakkad, Bronze Handicraft of Karnataka, Kutch Embroidery and Sikki Pas.The cobalt-blue pottery of Jaipur is delight full combination of Islamic and Chinese pottery. Madhalam is a percussion instrument which usually accompanies art forms like Kathakali. Bidar in Karnataka is famous for bidriware-a craft done on a metal plate of zinc, copper, tin, and lead.
The Kutch embroidery was brought about by ‘Kathi’ cattle breeders, they later settled down and created some fine needlework which displayed a variety of elements, designs, themes, patterns, and moods. Sikki is considered auspicious by the natives and involving in the daily practice of weaving it into ornaments and objects of utility is a way for women to vent out their creative instincts.
