Remembering the Father Lok Sabha

On This Day in 1956, India's first Lok Sabha speaker and an independent activist, Ganesh Vasudev Mavalankar died in Ahmedabad.Fondly remembers as "Dadasaheb”, Mavlankar occupies a place of resplendent honor. Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru acknowledged him as the "Father of Lok Sabha". He was born at Baroda on 27 November 1888. His family originally belonged to Mavalange in the Ratnagiri district of Bombay Presidency.
After completion of graduation, he enrolled himself for higher studies in Law. Soon he came under the influence of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and Mahatma Gandhi.
Dadasaheb served various post in his political careers such as Speaker of the Bombay Legislative Assembly, the President of the Central Legislative Assembly, and also the Speaker of the Constituent Assembly and the Provisional Parliament and the First Lok Sabha.
He occupies a very distinguished and honored place in the history of parliamentary democracy. On 27th February 1981, on the 25th Death Anniversary of Ganesh Vasudev Mavlankar, India Post has issued 35 Paise commemorative postage stamp. The stamp design consists of his portrait with a part of Parliament House in the foreground.
