Gold Varaha of Chalukyas of Kalyani

The above gold coin was a uniface Gold Varaha issued by Western Chalukyas or Kalyani Chalukyas.The Western Chalukya Empire ruled most of the western Deccan, South India, between the 10th and 12th centuries. This Kannadiga dynasty is sometimes called the Kalyani Chalukya after its regal capital at Kalyani in the modern Bidar District of Karnataka state.
The Western Chalukyas minted punch-marked Gold Varahas with Kannada and Nagari legends. They were large, thin gold coins with several varying punch marks on the obverse side. They usually carried multiple punches of symbols such as a stylised lion, Sri in Kannada, a spearhead, the king's title, a lotus, and others.
This particular Gold coin of Chalukyas of Kalyani is known as Varaha. The coin is thin flat planchet Square shape Lotus with dots in outer sides. The other side is blank. This extra fine gold coin of Kalyani Chalukyas was presented at Oswal Auction held at Ahmedabad on 9th Feb 2019 at the estimated price of Rs. 40000 – 50000.
