New 12-sided £1 UK Coin To Be Released in 2017
2016-03-31 Thu
We know of the famous saying which goes ‘There are two sides to a coin’. But we might have to relook at it now since the new UK £1 coin is, believe it or not, 12-sided! It does not have 12 faces though; it is in the shape of a 12 sided polygon, unlike the circular coins we usually see. The coin has gone into production a year before it will be officially circulated. The coins are set to be released in March 2017. Once they are introduced, there will be a period when the old and new coins will both be in circulation, for about 6 months. In recent years, almost 45 million pound coins that were counterfeited have been found in UK. The current £1 coin is being replaced for the first time in more than 30 years to stop counterfeiting activities. Officials state that the new 12-sided coin will be the world's most secure coin in circulation.
