One of the foremost leaders of Indian freedom struggle, Maulana Abul Kalam Azad breathed his last on today in 1958. He was a great Politian, noted writer and Journalist.Maulana Abul Kalam Azad was born as Abul Kalam Ghulam Muhiyuddin on November 11, 1888 in Mecca. Azad became the leader of the Khilafat Movement, during which he came in contact with Mahatma Gandhi.
In his early life, he rose to prominence through his work as a journalist and publishing critical work against British Raj. Azad established an Urdu weekly newspaper in 1912 named Al-Hilal. It was consequently banned in 1914, following which he started a new journal, the Al-Balagh.
Maulana Azad became the first education minister independent India. It was during his term that Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) and the University Grants Commission (UGC) was established.
To honor this great leader India post has issued various postal stamps. A definitive stamp was issued in October 2015 in the series makers of India. 15 Paisa stamp was also issued in 1966 with his portrait.
