The Eiffel Tower, considered one of the greatest engineering feats in the world, was completed one hundred and twenty-nine years ago in 1889! Tour Eiffel or the Eiffel Tower is a wrought iron lattice tower on the Champ de Mars in Paris, France. It is named after the engineer Gustave Eiffel, whose company designed and built the tower.The Eiffel Tower was built for the Universal Exhibition of 1899. This symbol of Paris is now the most visited paid monument in the world, with over 7 million visitors each year, and more than 250 million visitors since its opening to the public on 31st of March 1889.
This ‘French Iron Lady’ stands 324 meters tall and was the tallest man-made structure till 1930. The Eiffel Tower is, till date, the most beautiful and attractive building on the Parisian Skyline.
A ¢90 + ¢50 French postage stamp commemorating the 50th anniversary of the iconic Eiffel Tower was released on 23rd June, 1939.
The $10 coin, struck by the Pobjoy Mint, UK in 2014 to commemorate the 125th anniversary of the tower is a replica of it and has, on the reverse, a portrait of HM Queen Elizabeth II along with the text “ELIZABETH II”, the arches, and “BRITISH VIRGIN ISLANDS 2014” along the length of the tower.
