Aurangzeb’s Islam Bandar Mint

This Silver Rupee which weighs around 11.4g was issued by Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb. This silver rupee was minted in Islam Bandar.Islam Bandar was an Islamic name given to the port town of Rajapur on the Konkan Coast by Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb during his campaign against Maratha ruler Chhatrapati Sambhaji.
During the medieval period, Rajapur was a trading town, this coast was had great importance. Later it became a dispute between Mughals and Marathas by the end of 17th Century.
In the year 1660 when Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj defeated Afzal Khan, Shivaji became the master of South Konkan and Rajapur came under his control. Later on, after the death of Shivaji Maharaj, this region came under the control of Mughals.
Rajapur was renamed as Islam Bandar and with this, the economy of Rajapur was monetized with for the for the first time Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb had issued the silver with the mint Islam Bandar at the beginning of the eighteenth century.
This silver rupee is listed for INR 1,75,000 in the upcoming auction of Todywalla which will be held in Ahmadabad on 9th February 2019.
