James Cook discovered the Hawaiian Islands

18th January 1778 is a day when James Cook, one of the world’s greatest explorers discovers the Hawaiian Islands. The Hawaiian Islands are an archipelago of eight major islands. James Cook named the archipelago the “Sandwich Islands” in honor of the then first Lord of the Admiralty John Montagu, 4th Earl of Sandwich.The British navigator James Cook was born on 7th November in the village of Marton in Yorkshire. Cook joined the British merchant navy as a teenager and in 1755 he joined the Royal Navy.
Later, he commanded three Pacific Ocean voyages and sailed around the world twice. On his third and last Pacific voyage, Cook became the first European to visit Hawaii.
