Thomas Lanier Williams III or Tennessee Williams was a celebrated American playwright and author of many stage classics. He is considered to be one of the foremost playwrights of 20th-century American drama.

Thomas Lanier Williams III was born in Columbus, Mississippi on 26th March 1911. Some of his most famous works include The Glass Menagerie (1944), A Streetcar Named Desire (1947), Cat on a Hot Tin Roof (1955), and Sweet Bird of Youth (1959), A Street Named Desire, Long Day’s Journey into Night, Death of a Salesman and etc. He also wrote short stories, poetry, essays and a volume of memoirs. Tennessee Williams was inducted into the American Theatre Hall of Fame in 1979.

A painting by Michael Deas of Tennessee Williams was turned into a 32 cents stamp by the U.S. Postal Service in 1994.
