Indore was under the dominance of the Holkar Dynasty – one among the dominant Maratha powers which had its stronghold in Central India along with Peshwas, shindhias and Gaikwad. Indore state originated in 1728, it was a grant of land to Malharrao Holkar from Maratha Peshwa of Poona in the north of Narmada River.Yashwant Rao was a Maharaja of Indore state from 1926 to 1948. He succeeded his father Tukojirao Holkar III, who abdicated in his favor on February 26, 1926. He was installed on the throne on 11 March 1926 under a regency council.
During the 200 year of rule, many types of Holkar coins were minted. Yashwant Rao issued copper coins in Annas series. Represented here is a copper quarter Annas issued during his reign. The obverse of a coin showed the Bust of Shivaji Rao facing slightly right and legend ‘Shirimant Maharaja Yashwant Rao Holkar Bahadur Indore’ in Devanagari. The reverse of a coin inscribed the Date and Value in Devanagari within a wreath.
